2019 UTC Opening Lecture

An open invitation is extended to friends, family, community members, students and colleagues of United Theological College, UME and UCA to the 2019 UTC Opening Lecture.

The Opening Lecture is featured as part of the official 2019 UTC Opening Day to be held on Friday 1 March at The Centre For Ministry – 16 Masons Drive North Parramatta.

Dr Anthony Rees will present the lecture: “On Patting Snakes and Sitting Under Trees: Prophetic Images of Just Peace” from 11am.

Lecture Descriptor:
While it is true that violence abounds in much of the prophetic material, it is also true that the prophets might also give a glimpse of what a Just Peace might look like.
Human failure and hubris, the subject of prophetic judgement, brings suffering to the whole of the created order.
The divine judgement likewise bears upon all of the created order, destroying human and non-human alike.
Any thinking about a reconciled world, then, must take the totality of the created order into account.
That is, there can be no reconciliation, no peace, which does not take all of creation into account.

This paper examines two prophetic images of a reconciled world through the lens of Just Peace thinking. In doing so, it attempts to pry these images from the world of utopia and understand them as a new (old) way of being in the world.

Guests are welcome to join us for the lecture, or the full day of activities at UTC (9.30am – 3pm, including morning tea and lunch).
