Uniting Mission and Education and United Theological College are pleased to announce that Dr Michael Mawson has accepted a position with UTC in the area of Systematic Theology.
Michael is currently Senior Lecturer in Theological Ethics in the School of Divinity, History, and Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen.
Michael grew up in New Zealand attending Anglican and Presbytarian churches and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and History and a Master’s degree in Religious Studies at Victoria University of Wellington.
His interests in ethics emerged from practical involvements in youth work and community development, in particular with the Urban Vision community, and he also worked as an educator and researcher for the Anglican Social Justice Commission of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Michael completed his Bachelor and Master’s degrees at the University of Wellington in New Zealand and earned his PhD at the University of Notre Dame in the United States.
Michael is a leading international expert on the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. His recent Oxford University Press volume explores Bonhoeffer’s understanding of the shape and purpose of the church. He is also a co-editor for the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
In addition to his work on Bonhoeffer, Michael is interested in the intersection of theology and ageing, disability studies, and political theology.
Michael and his family will join the UTC and UME communities in the middle of 2019.
We very much look forward to welcoming them in the new year.
