United Theological College delivers first Intensive Course in Port Macquarie…with success.

When United Theological College hosted their first Intensive 5 Day course in Port Macquarie, lecturer Rev Dr Rhonda White (pictured front row middle, wearing black) knew right from the start, that it would be the first of many in the Mid North Coast Region of New South Wales.

“United Theological College has been looking to deliver an Intensive Course in the region for a while now, and we are just thrilled with the response and the success of the five days,” said Rev Dr White, at the conclusion of the intensive week.

“Practical Theology is one of the most practice based areas of theology and one which can have so many applications in the day-to-day practice of many occupations – which made this subject a great course to deliver first.”

With the support of Port Macquarie Uniting Church, which hosted the course for five days from Monday 9 – Friday 13 July 2018, nine students were able to explore and unpack practical theology in a friendly and supportive environment.

“We had youth leaders, teachers, chaplains, medics and miners among others all with an interest in engaging with theology in their discipleship and day to day living– such a diverse mix of students, genders and ages made for fruitful discussion and learning.”

Practical Theology is the first of eight subjects that UTC plans to deliver via the Port Macquarie hub in the next four years – with two intensive subjects each year.  Should students choose to enrol in all eight subjects, it can provide them with a Diploma or Graduate Diploma of Theology, from Charles Sturt University.

“At UTC we understand that people live busy lives and often the week-to-week format of learning can be a challenge, and even more so, in regional areas.  The study of a subject in a short five-day course intensive format combines the advantages of classroom learning with the flexibility usually associated with online learning. It is both time efficient and a great way to learn.”

“Personally, I really enjoyed teaching Practical Theology in Port Macquarie – as it is one of the most hands-on, practical and practice-based subjects in theology – and together we really enjoyed challenging the subject matter and each other.”

“The subject was a great entry level exploration of theology with a focus on how we make sense of where God is present in our lives.”

“Hopefully the students enjoyed the experience and are inspired to complete the assessment tasks and reading.  I expect some even found that the study of theology opened doors they didn’t even know existed – which is what learning and education is all about.”
