Mark Hillis

A Uniting Church in Australia Minister of the Word, since 1977, Mark has served with the church in Orange, Papua New Guinea, Tweed Heads, Newcastle and Toronto in both educational and pastoral contexts. He is a graduate of the University of NSW (Arts), the University of Sydney (Divinity), the former Brisbane College of Advanced Education, now Griffith University (RE), and the University of Newcastle (PhD, 2006). Mark was National Director for Christian Education from 2005 to 2010, and has recently served as Minister of the Epping Congregation in Sydney.

Mark is an Academic Associate of the CSU School of Theology and Adjunct Faculty member of the North Parramatta Campus. He is a regular contributor to the activities of the International Seminar on Religious Education and Values (ISREV) and the Australian Association for Religious Education (AARE). His current research interests include biblical narrative in religious education, and intergenerational education and worship. Mark also enjoys exploring intersections between literature, the visual arts and the interpretation of Scripture.


Most recent papers for ISREV (Turku, Finland 2012 and York, England 2014) have focussed upon intergenerational worship, teaching and learning, as part of an ongoing study.
